Boys' basketball season preview
Tanner
Basketball season is just around the corner and the boys are very prepared. The 8th grade boys had a pretty disappointing season last year, losing in the first round of the Pioneer League tournament against Mulvane. They are looking to rebuild and come back strong this season. Most of the players have high expectations and are looking forward, hopefully, to a championship season.
The 8th grade boys feel that Ark City or Rose Hill will be their biggest competitors/rivals this season. They feel Ark City will be a difficult opponent, mainly because they won league last year. “If we work hard every single day, we should have a successful season” is what Blake says about the upcoming season. Last year if they had high intensity and effort, they came out successful most of the time. Most of the players feel that they will have basically the same amount of players come out as last year. They will be having a new coach this year. Ryan Jenkins is going to be the new coach, because Coach Ybarra is going to coach the 7th grade boys team. The players hope that coach Jenkins will be a good fit for the team and have a high intensity level.
Some of the 7th graders are nervous for the season and some 8th graders had some advice for them. Luke said, “If you don’t give up, and never quit on your team, you will be fine.” , Blake thinks they should know, “ to never give up and just don’t be nervous because once you are out there playing, you feel completely comfortable.” A lot of the boys from both grades have high expectations for this upcoming season, they are very excited.

Girls' basketball season preview

The eighth grade girls finished last year with an undefeated record. Their starting five were Rylee, Mykiland, Myriland, Allison, and Lexi. “The starting players this year will probably be the same” Rylee stated. Their biggest competitor was Rose Hill. I sat down with Rylee and Lexi. They think that they will beat Rose Hill again because when playing them last year they didn’t play to their full potential. They also believe that many players from last years B team will quit this year. Rylee says “The B team was not as favored as the A team was.” Their plans to improve as players include trying harder in practice and in conditioning. Lexi’s goal is to make more than ten points per game. The girls start practice November 7th. They are excited to start practices and for the upcoming season. They worked hard last year and plan to do the same this year. If they put in the same amount of effort their result this year should be similar to last year’s. They plan to win league again.

Wellington Middle School’s seventh grade volleyball placed in second at the Pioneer League Tournament. They finished the season 18-1 and 5-0 in league. They lost to Clearwater in the championship game in two sets. The first game’s score was 25-21, and the second game’s score was 25-22. The girls were Pioneer League Champions and Pioneer League Tournament Runner-Ups. It was tough for the seventh grade girls to lose their first game in the championship. “We could’ve done better in the championship game if we made our serves.” stated Nikki. “We also didn’t play hard enough.”
The Pioneer League Tournament was in Mulvane, Kansas on October 15th. The seventh grade girls’ first game started at nine o’clock against Winfield. They won the game in two sets. The first game was 25-21, and the second game was 25-10. They also beat Ark City and El Dorado in two sets.
The seventh grade girls were undefeated in the regular season, and had beaten Clearwater twice. “If we tried hard enough, we could beat Clearwater if we played them one more time.” Nikki says. “We just gave up.”The girls were losing 24-14 in the championship game. They scored eight points while Clearwater scored zero points, bringing Wellington back into the game. The Indians were ahead for the majority of the game. Wellington missed their serve when the score was 24-22, so the Indians won the championship.

Seventh grade football

This year the seventh grade football team ended their season with a win against Mulvane giving them a 4-3 record. The players were generally satisfied with their winning record. All of the players plan to keep working hard in the off season. Many players stated that their favorite part of the season was the end of the last game. They held Mulvane on several drives to maintain their lead, and win the game. Sonny made several great defensive plays to prevent a deep pass from being completed.
Jay said, “Not every season is going to be perfect, but when things get tough, you have to fight through it.”
The head coach of the seventh grade team left on vacation, missing the final two games. Coach DeJarnett became the head coach. He moved some of the players to different positions to prepare them for the final games of the season. Before the last game, Coach Finch gave an inspiring and emotional speech. He explained to the players how he believes that the seventh grade class and the classes above can make Wellington High School football great again. He described how much this town loves and supports all of the football teams. He also encouraged people to play again next year because we need everyone to make it work. The last words of his speech were “It has been an honor to coach for you.”
